Kickstart your career at Smulders

A traineeship is a kickstart to a vibrant career. It’s true, practice makes perfect - but no, we’re not talking about an internship. We are talking about a valuable trajectory at Smulders, your official first job. A traineeship at our company gives graduates the opportunity to gain expertise in different departments such as engineering, purchasing, production, supply chain and much more. Experience has proven it's a win-win situation. We genuinely provide ample opportunities for personal growth while contributing to the success of our group.

Siebe Van Roie is a great example - he started as a trainee and is now a fully-fledged Assistant Project Manager in the offshore substations department. Curious to hear about his journey?

Why did you choose Smulders, and why do you like working here?

“From a young age I wanted to do something in offshore, the sea has always fascinated me. And preferably at a company with an international scope of action. Fresh out of school and through a recruitment agency, I connected with Smulders. The application process went smoothly, and I’ve now been with the company for over four years. Every day is like: 'going to work and being proud of what you do'. Even though we are the market leader in Europe, responsible for mega-projects, there is a nice family atmosphere here. Everyone's door is open, from welder to director.”

What exactly does the traineeship entail?

“When I started, this was still a fairly new thing, I was the 2nd trainee. A traineeship typically lasts about a year and a half, during which you rotate through all the departments. However, my experience was a bit different. After just six weeks of working in engineering, preparing work, attending meetings, and more, an urgent need arose within the offshore department. I immediately said yes – offshore had already piqued my interest during the recruitment process. So, my traineeship continued in that area. During the first year, I worked closely with a mentor, and in the 2nd year, I gradually took on more responsibilities. It was a very natural progression. From setting up a team, consulting with clients, to organising offshore campaigns, I had the opportunity to learn from the best.”

Where are you in your journey?

“I have been a full-fledged Assistant Project Manager for some time now. After spending 2 years in the offshore department, I’m currently working on my 3rd jacket project. There was never an 'official' end to my traineeship; you just know when the time is right to take on more responsibility and ownership.”

What are the benefits of a traineeship?

“Firstly, huge opportunities to expand your knowledge, for example: about construction methodologies, how to get something into production, who to address for purchases, about systems and so on. There is a lot of know-how to be gained. Furthermore, the network you are starting to build as a trainee, because you come into contact with so many people. As an Assistant Project Manager, you really need that network. You get questions from all departments, so you need to know who to go to.”

What tips would you like to pass on to other candidates?

“Actively search for info. There is no manual or blueprint to follow. Put on your boots and put on your helmet. Knock on doors and engage in communication. You do a lot of tasks, and with time you will learn what Project Management actually involves. Keep your feet on the ground, start with the basics and take time to get to know the firm.”
