Work in progress
This is how Cibele Goveia describes herself when we ask her about her professional development. It reflects her drive to learn something new every day and her commitment to being the best she can be in her role as a Project Controller. Her open, people‑centred outlook certainly helps, and so does the warm Smulders family around her.

It’s a pleasure to meet you, Cibele. Could you tell us a bit about your role as Project Controller?
“It’s all about planning, budgets and project monitoring. Together with my colleagues, I make sure our Project Managers have the right insights to make well‑informed decisions. I mainly work on offshore projects, although I have also worked on
onshore applications.”
How did you end up at Smulders?
“My husband worked for Smulders as an engineer, and in May 2024 I was given the opportunity to join the company as a Project Controller. This implied we had to move from Brazil to Belgium with our children – quite a big step. Although I had previously worked in controlling roles, my background was mainly in finance. The first period was a steep learning curve, because project controlling involves much more than just financial monitoring.”
What appeals to you about this role?
“The mix of figures, planning, communication, and collaboration is what makes it so interesting. I love discovering new things and continuing to develop myself. No two days are ever the same. I usually start by reviewing the project schedule and checking the progress of our projects, but by the end of the day things can look completely different again. Projects are constantly evolving. Sometimes unexpected challenges arise and we have to react quickly to avoid delays.”
To some, the term ‘Project Controller’ sounds rather abstract. How would you describe your role?
“I sometimes compare it to an aeroplane coming in to land. The Project Controller is on the ground with the signage, helping to guide the aircraft and determine the right route. We provide the information that enables Project Managers to make the right decisions. We help them keep everything on track.”
What do you like most about your job?
“The dynamic nature of the role and its people‑focused approach really appeal to me, because you’re constantly working with different departments. And that fits perfectly with who I am: someone who values collaboration and strong relationships. I’m a firm believer in open communication, and I look forward to further expanding my network within Smulders in the years ahead.”
What’s it like working with the other departments?
“Fascinating. Each department has its own priorities, and sometimes you have to find the right balance to get everyone aligned. At the same time, it gives you a great deal of insight into both the processes and the people behind them. Ultimately, everyone wants the same thing: to deliver a successful project. That common goal is something we all share.”
How does Smulders help you to develop further as a professional?
“I learn something new every day – and that’s one of the reasons I think Smulders is such a great employer. There are plenty of training opportunities, both in‑house and external. But above all, you learn from experienced colleagues who are always willing to share their knowledge. For anyone who wants to grow, this is a brilliant place.”
What challenges are you still facing today?
“The macro and the micro… understanding the bigger picture while paying close attention to the details. Priorities can shift quickly, you need to stay flexible, communicate clearly, and constantly reflect on the impact of your decisions. That’s why I call myself a ‘work in progress’. With so many kind, supportive colleagues around me, it feels just right. Whenever I have questions, there’s always someone willing to help me think things through – and that really inspires confidence. We’re a strong, close‑knit team.”
What does the future hold?
“My main goal is to become even stronger and more independent in my current role. I’m very eager to keep progressing, and who knows, additional responsibilities may come my way. The bigger the challenge, the better.”
What advice would you give to other young talent?
“Be curious and don’t be afraid to ask questions. This sector is promising and growing rapidly. Every day brings new insights and new technologies. Be open to collaboration and communication, you’ll learn an incredible amount from both.”
Ultimately, everyone wants the same thing: to deliver a successful project. That common goal is something we all share.
