 Your tasks 

As a Data Architect & Engineer, you will help build Smulders' data foundation. You combine architecture with hands-on data engineering and connect data from different systems into a reliable and scalable platform. In doing so, you create the foundation for Power BI, analytics and future AI applications. 

Your responsibilities: 

  • Together with the ICT Director, you develop Smulders' data architecture and data strategy and help define the roadmap for Data, Analytics & AI. 
  • You design a scalable data foundation in which data from different business systems, databases and sites is brought together reliably. 
  • You unlock and integrate data from ERP, Finance, HR, Planning, Engineering, Production and other systems, ensuring a logical and normalized data structure. 
  • You help build a future-proof hybrid data landscape that brings together cloud solutions and on-premises data sources. 
  • You monitor the quality and performance of data flows, ensuring users can rely on consistent, up-to-date and accurate data. 
  • You ensure that reporting and analytics can scale without placing unnecessary load on operational source systems. 
  • You develop architecture principles and standards for data governance, data quality, metadata, security and ownership. 
  • You help lay the technical foundation for AI and machine learning. For example, production and sensor data that we want to use in the future to make processes and quality more predictable. 
  • You create an environment in which teams can develop and use reliable data products. 
  • You work closely with Data Analysts, the ERP team, ICT colleagues, business stakeholders and external partners, translating needs into sustainable technical solutions. 

Your magic skills 

  • You have a strong background in Data Engineering and are ready to take on architectural responsibility, or you already combine both roles today. 
  • You have at least 3 years of relevant experience as a Data Engineer. For this key role, we preferably look for someone with around 5 to 6 years of relevant experience in data. 
  • Je hebt grondige kennis van SQL, relationele databases, datamodellering en database-normalisatie,Data pipelines, ETL/ELT, API integrations and data warehouse/lakehouse concepts hold few secrets for you. 
  • You have experience with modern Microsoft data technologies, such as Microsoft Fabric, Azure Data Factory, Azure Data Lake and the Power BI ecosystem. 
  • You understand how to build a data environment in which availability, quality, reliability, performance and security are central. 
  • You can think architecturally and strategically, while remaining hands-on enough to help implement solutions yourself. 
  • You communicate effectively with both technical colleagues and business stakeholders and can explain complex topics in an understandable way. 
  • You are confident in setting direction, creating structure and driving decisions forward, while always working collaboratively. 
  • You work independently, in a structured and pragmatic way, and take ownership of your domain. 
  • As you will work across the entire group, you can communicate fluently and professionally in English.

Your little extra

You do not need to tick every box. But we will be even more excited if:

  • you have experience defining an enterprise data architecture or data roadmap
  • you are familiar with Microsoft Fabric and modern lakehouse architectures
  • you have experience working with data in a production, engineering of project environment
  • you have worked with IoT or sensor data
  • your are interested in AI and machine learning and, above all, understand the data foundation required to make AI applications reliable
  • you enjoy working in an environment where not everything has been defined yet and get energy from creating structure, making choices and building something new
